Embrasure

Embrasure is an architectural term referring to the opening in a wall or parapet between the inside and outside of a fortified building, typically found in castles, forts, and other defensive structures. The primary purpose of an embrasure is to allow weapons to be fired from within the structure while minimizing the exposure of the defender. Historically, embrasures were designed to accommodate various types of weaponry, such as bows, crossbows, and later, firearms. The shape and size of the embrasure would vary depending on the type of weapon being used and the desired field of fire. In medieval castles, embrasures were often found in conjunction with arrow loops or loopholes, narrow vertical slits that allowed archers to fire arrows while remaining protected. As firearms became more prevalent, embrasures evolved to accommodate the changing technology, with designs featuring splayed sides and a horizontal opening, allowing for a wider field of fire and easier use of cannons or guns. The design of embrasures also took into account the need for defenders to have a clear view of the surrounding area, while still providing adequate protection from enemy fire. In addition to their functional role, embrasures also served as an important architectural feature, contributing to the overall aesthetic and imposing appearance of fortified structures. Today, while embrasures are no longer used for their original defensive purpose, they remain an integral part of the historical and architectural heritage of many castles and fortifications around the world.
