Electronic Semi-conductors
Electronic semi-conductors are materials that have a unique property of being able to conduct electricity under certain conditions, while also being able to act as insulators under other conditions. These materials are widely used in the electronics industry to create a wide range of electronic devices, including transistors, diodes, and integrated circuits. The properties of electronic semi-conductors are determined by the arrangement of their atoms and the number of electrons in their outermost energy levels. In general, semi-conductors have four valence electrons, which means they can form covalent bonds with other atoms to create a crystal lattice structure. This structure allows electrons to move through the material, creating an electrical current. One of the key characteristics of electronic semi-conductors is their ability to be doped, or intentionally contaminated with impurities. This process changes the electrical properties of the material, making it either more conductive or less conductive. For example, adding impurities such as boron or aluminum to silicon creates a p-type semiconductor, which has an excess of positively charged holes. Conversely, adding impurities such as phosphorus or arsenic creates an n-type semiconductor, which has an excess of negatively charged electrons. Electronic semi-conductors have revolutionized the electronics industry, enabling the creation of smaller, faster, and more powerful electronic devices. They are used in everything from smartphones and computers to medical equipment and solar panels.
