Electrolysers

Electrolysers are devices that use electricity to break down a substance into its constituent elements or compounds. They are commonly used in industrial processes to produce chemicals such as hydrogen, chlorine, and sodium hydroxide. Electrolysers work by passing an electric current through a solution or molten substance, causing the ions to move towards the electrodes and undergo chemical reactions. The most common type of electrolyser is the water electrolyser, which splits water into hydrogen and oxygen gases. Water electrolysis is a promising technology for renewable energy storage and conversion, as it allows excess electricity from renewable sources such as wind and solar to be stored as hydrogen gas. Other types of electrolysis include the electrolysis of brine to produce chlorine and sodium hydroxide, and the electrolysis of molten aluminum oxide to produce aluminum metal. Electrolysers can be classified into two main types: membrane electrolysis and diaphragm electrolysis. In membrane electrolysis, a membrane separates the anode and cathode compartments, allowing only the ions to pass through and preventing the mixing of the products. In diaphragm electrolysis, a porous diaphragm separates the anode and cathode compartments, allowing the products to be separated by physical means. Despite their many advantages, electrolysers also have some limitations. They require a significant amount of electricity to operate, which can make them expensive to run. Additionally, the electrodes used in electrolysers can be prone to corrosion and degradation over time, which can reduce their efficiency and lifespan.
