Electric Incandescent Lamps
Electric incandescent lamps are a type of lighting fixture that produces light by heating a filament wire until it glows. This type of lamp was first developed in the late 19th century and quickly became popular due to its efficiency and ease of use. The filament is typically made of tungsten, which has a high melting point and can withstand the high temperatures required to produce light. The filament is enclosed in a glass bulb that is filled with an inert gas, such as argon or nitrogen, to prevent the filament from oxidizing and burning out too quickly. Electric incandescent lamps are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, including the classic pear-shaped bulb that is commonly used in household lamps. They are also available in a range of wattages, from low-wattage bulbs used for accent lighting to high-wattage bulbs used for industrial applications. The color of the light produced by an incandescent lamp is determined by the temperature of the filament, with cooler filaments producing warmer, yellowish light and hotter filaments producing cooler, bluish light. While electric incandescent lamps were once the most common type of lighting fixture, they have largely been replaced by more energy-efficient alternatives, such as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This is because incandescent lamps are relatively inefficient, converting only about 5% of the energy they consume into visible light, with the rest being lost as heat. In contrast, CFLs and LEDs are much more efficient, converting up to 80% of the energy they consume into visible light.
