Electric Current Transformers
Electric current transformers, also known as CTs, are devices that are used to measure and transform high-voltage electrical currents into lower, more manageable levels. They are commonly used in power transmission and distribution systems to monitor and control the flow of electricity. CTs work by inducing a secondary current in a coil of wire that is wound around a magnetic core. The amount of current induced in the secondary coil is proportional to the amount of current flowing through the primary coil, which is the high-voltage current that needs to be measured. Electric current transformers are essential components of power systems because they allow for accurate measurement and monitoring of electrical currents. They are used to protect equipment from damage due to overcurrent, to monitor power quality, and to provide data for billing and other purposes. CTs are also used in electrical testing and calibration, as well as in research and development. There are several types of electric current transformers, including bushing CTs, wound CTs, and bar CTs. Bushing CTs are installed in the bushings of high-voltage equipment, such as transformers and circuit breakers. Wound CTs are typically used for lower voltage applications, such as in metering and protection relays. Bar CTs are used in high-current applications, such as in switchgear and power systems. Overall, electric current transformers are critical components of power systems that allow for safe and efficient operation. They play a vital role in ensuring that electrical equipment operates within safe limits and that power is delivered reliably and efficiently.
