El Cuartel del Mar Restaurant is an architecturally significant adaptive reuse project located in Chiclana de la Frontera, Spain, that transformed a former Civil Guard barracks into a sophisticated dining and cultural destination. Designed by architect Paula Rosales, this Bronze A' Design Award-winning establishment exemplifies thoughtful architectural rehabilitation while preserving the historical essence of the original structure. The restaurant complex, situated atop the Loma del Puerco hillside overlooking Barrosa Beach, consists of two parallel pavilions that harmoniously integrate with the coastal landscape. The western pavilion houses the main restaurant and kitchen facilities, while the eastern section accommodates exhibition spaces and service areas, connected by a multifunctional outdoor patio that serves as the project's circulatory spine. The design philosophy emphasizes sustainability and environmental integration through the use of passive solar protection strategies, natural materials, and local construction techniques, including wood, woven reeds, and lime mortar. The architectural intervention demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to the surrounding environment, incorporating strategic bird-watching areas and spaces for cultural activities. The interior spaces are carefully organized to optimize operational efficiency, with distinct zones for visitors and staff, while the flexible exhibition area can adapt to various leisure and cultural functions. The project's sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere is achieved through a thoughtful combination of natural materials, geometric compositions, and modern architectural elements such as cross pillars, all while maintaining respect for the existing structure's character and the coastal setting's unique attributes.
