Edinburgh Art Center

Edinburgh Art Center is an innovative architectural project that seamlessly integrates contemporary design with historical context in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town. Located along the historic Royal Mile, this cultural facility was conceived through a sophisticated analysis of urban textures and topographical contours, resulting in a harmonious blend of modern architecture within a UNESCO World Heritage site. The structure, designed by Egyptian architect Ahmed Hany, encompasses a built area of 24x23 meters within a 93x25-meter garden space, featuring a thoughtfully crafted series of exhibition spaces connected by level changes that reflect the city's natural topography. The design philosophy draws profound inspiration from Edinburgh's unique character, where centuries of history converge with contemporary culture, incorporating both the medieval charm of the Old Town and the Georgian elegance of the New Town. The center's interior spaces ingeniously integrate vegetation, particularly in the entrance zone, creating a natural transition between the exterior Dunbar's Close garden and the built environment. The project, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to its heritage context while introducing innovative spatial solutions. The design process utilized advanced computational methodologies, including grasshopper and rhino software for urban mapping and contouring analysis, with 3ds max and vray engine employed for detailed modeling and visualization. Completed between December 2016 and March 2017, the project successfully addresses the challenge of creating a contemporary cultural space that respects and enhances its historic surroundings.
