Eastern Calligraphy Public Space
Eastern Calligraphy Public Space is an innovative architectural interior design project that masterfully integrates traditional Eastern calligraphic aesthetics with contemporary spatial design principles. Located in Taichung City, Taiwan, this 3,310-square-meter public space exemplifies the harmonious fusion of cultural artistry and modern functionality. The design, conceived by Li-Ling Chang, draws profound inspiration from the fluid movements and elegant qualities of Eastern calligraphy, manifesting these elements through carefully orchestrated architectural features. The space is characterized by its sophisticated interplay of dim ceiling lights traversing through darkened areas, creating a poised ambience that mirrors the deliberate strokes of calligraphic art. The integration of white, grey, and black marble throughout the floors and walls serves to emphasize spatial characteristics while maintaining aesthetic coherence. A notable feature is the reception counter, where natural light interacts with exquisite floor curtains and wood elements, creating a harmonious balance between hard and soft materials that reflects the balanced nature of calligraphic artistry. The design's innovative approach to public space earned it the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its exceptional contribution to contemporary spatial design. The project successfully addresses the challenges of urban density while maintaining a strong connection to cultural heritage, featuring interim spaces constructed in neat lines that evoke the upright forms of regular scripts, and circular lighting elements that parallel the delicate quality of rice paper, traditionally used in Eastern calligraphy.
