Dwarfs ASD Children Educational Kit is an innovative educational tool designed specifically for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) aged 6-12 years who are integrated into mainstream education. This specialized therapeutic device, created by designer Man Wai Wong in collaboration with Chi Wing Lee, focuses on addressing two critical aspects of ASD development: emotional expression and communication skills. The kit consists of a central component called the Emoboard, measuring 400mm x 400mm x 283mm, and multiple Emobjects, each approximately 70mm cubic in dimension. The system employs a multi-sensory approach, incorporating visual, tactile, and auditory stimulation through advanced RFID technology and digital programming via Arduino and Pure Data platforms. The interactive gameplay, facilitated by a social worker, guides children through a structured process of emotional recognition and regulation. Children select Emobjects representing different emotions, engaging with them through multiple sensory channels before placing them on the Emoboard, which responds with corresponding emotional sound feedback. This innovative design, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Toys, Games and Hobby Products Design category, represents a significant advancement in therapeutic educational tools, particularly in its approach to emotional intelligence development for ASD children. The design emerged from extensive research conducted in Hong Kong, including direct observations of ASD children and consultations with social workers, culminating in a comprehensive solution that bridges the gap between emotional understanding and expression in ASD education.
