Dual Zero Waste
Dual Zero waste is an innovative liquid hand wash packaging design concept that revolutionizes sustainable personal care products by utilizing solid soap as its primary packaging material. This groundbreaking design, created by Yi Teng Shih and Jiani Zeng, addresses the critical environmental challenge of plastic pollution in the fast-moving consumer goods sector, which generates approximately 75% of municipal solid waste. The system consists of a high-density solid soap exterior that functions as both container and secondary product, featuring dimensions of 65mm width, 45mm depth, and 130mm height. The design employs a sophisticated combination of olive oil, coconut oil, goat milk, lavender, and sodium hydroxide for the solid soap component, while the liquid soap utilizes olive oil, coconut oil, potassium hydroxide, and borax. After the liquid soap is depleted, users can remove the paper wrapping and utilize the solid soap packaging for hand washing, leaving only the dispenser pump as a reusable component for future refills. This circular design approach significantly reduces waste by transforming what would typically be discarded packaging into a functional product, effectively addressing the limitations of traditional linear economic models in consumer goods. The design, which won the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category, demonstrates exceptional innovation in sustainable design practices by incorporating user convenience with environmental responsibility. The dispenser mechanism features a specially engineered soft spring system that ensures the solid soap structure maintains its integrity during use while facilitating easy dispensing of the liquid soap.
