Dressmakers’ Dummies

Dressmakers' dummies, also known as dress forms, are three-dimensional models of the human torso used by tailors, seamstresses, and fashion designers to create and alter clothing. These dummies are typically made of foam, fiberglass, or plastic and come in a range of sizes and shapes to accommodate different body types and styles of clothing. They are designed to mimic the proportions and contours of the human body, allowing designers to visualize how a garment will fit and drape on a real person. Dressmakers' dummies have been used for centuries, with the earliest known examples dating back to ancient Greece and Rome. In the Middle Ages, dressmakers would use wooden mannequins to create custom-fitted garments for their clients. Today, modern dress forms are adjustable, with dials and knobs that allow the user to adjust the measurements of the dummy to match the specific measurements of the person for whom the garment is being made. In addition to their practical uses in garment design and production, dressmakers' dummies have also become popular as decorative objects in home decor. Vintage dress forms, in particular, are highly sought after by collectors and can be found in antique shops and online marketplaces.
