Draw Reins
Draw reins are a piece of horse riding equipment used to help control the horse's head carriage and encourage them to work in a more collected frame. They consist of two separate reins that attach to the girth of the horse's saddle and run through the bit rings, then back to the rider's hands. The reins are then passed through a set of rings or loops that are attached to a strap that runs from the girth, over the horse's withers, and up to the rider's hands. When the rider pulls on the reins, the strap tightens, and the horse's head is pulled down and inwards towards their chest. Draw reins are often used by riders during training sessions to help the horse develop the muscles necessary to carry themselves in a collected frame. They can also be used to help correct a horse that has a tendency to carry their head too high or too far out in front of them. However, it is important to note that draw reins should only be used by experienced riders who understand how to use them correctly and in moderation. Overuse or misuse of draw reins can cause the horse to become reliant on them, and can even cause physical damage to the horse's neck and back muscles. Despite their potential benefits, draw reins are a controversial piece of equipment in the equestrian world. Some riders and trainers believe that they are a valuable tool for training and developing horses, while others believe that they are unnecessary and potentially harmful. Ultimately, the decision to use draw reins should be made on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the horse's individual needs and the rider's level of experience.
