This remarkable design, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category, draws its inspiration from the ancient Dragon Boat Sacrificial Ceremony, where Chinese ancestors prayed for disease eradication and abundant harvests. The design features a meticulously crafted outer box dominated by a dragon motif, where mugwort leaves ingeniously outline the dragon's torso while reed leaf grain patterns form its scales, exemplifying an artistic fusion of natural elements with mythological symbolism. The inner box presents two dragons holding Zongzi, a traditional festival food, symbolizing double luck in Chinese culture. Measuring 475mm x 213mm x 130mm, the packaging employs eco-friendly paper and sophisticated 3D paper carving techniques to achieve its intricate design. The interactive element is particularly noteworthy, as lifting the box lid triggers a gravity-activated mechanism where the inner box's four independent sides unfold like a rising curtain, creating a theatrical reveal of the contents. This design innovation successfully addresses the challenge of integrating traditional cultural elements with modern packaging requirements, offering users both a visual and tactile experience. Created during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the design carries deeper symbolic significance, incorporating elements such as the Dragon Boat, Zongzi, and mugwort to convey traditional blessings and protection against illness, while simultaneously preserving and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Dragon Boat Festival through its multi-layered, three-dimensional patterns and sophisticated cardboard engineering.
