Double Barn House
Double Barn House is an innovative residential architecture project located in the suburbs of Warsaw, Poland, that masterfully reinterprets traditional Mazovian architectural elements through a contemporary lens. This sophisticated dwelling, designed by architect Katarzyna Starzyk, encompasses a total floor area of 351.61 square meters and demonstrates exceptional spatial planning through its distinctive dual-block configuration. The architectural composition deliberately splits the structure into two interconnected volumes to maintain harmony with the surrounding single-family housing landscape, while its exterior features graphite hand-formed tiles that echo the dark pine trunks prevalent in the area. The design's thoughtful approach to privacy is evident in its street-facing facade, which maintains resident seclusion through minimal window placement, while the south-western elevation opens generously to the garden through large windows. The interior organization reflects a careful consideration of family dynamics, with distinct zones for parents and children connected by a glass hall and a dramatic two-story living room. The project, completed in 2022, exemplifies sustainable design principles through its use of PIR board insulation and innovative solutions such as concealed gutters and downpipes. The design's excellence was recognized with a Golden A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, acknowledging its outstanding contribution to contemporary residential architecture. The project successfully balances modern comfort with environmental sensitivity, featuring light HPL board interior finishes that create a welcoming atmosphere while the dark exterior seamlessly integrates with the natural surroundings, demonstrating a sophisticated approach to contemporary suburban living.
