Dorothea Lange

Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) was an influential American documentary photographer and photojournalist, renowned for her powerful images that humanized the consequences of the Great Depression and later, World War II. Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, Lange studied photography at Columbia University and later established a successful portrait studio in San Francisco. However, her focus shifted towards social documentary photography during the 1930s, as she began to capture the struggles of unemployed and homeless people during the Great Depression. Her most iconic image, Migrant Mother (1936), became a symbol of the era, depicting a destitute mother with her children in a migrant farm worker camp. Lange's empathetic approach and her ability to convey the human condition through her lens led to her employment with the Farm Security Administration (FSA), where she documented the plight of sharecroppers, displaced farm families, and migrant workers across the American West and South. Later in her career, Lange photographed the forced relocation of Japanese Americans to internment camps during World War II, as well as the founding of the United Nations in 1945. Her work greatly influenced the development of documentary photography and continues to serve as a poignant reminder of the power of the photographic medium to effect social change.
