Dogtrot

Dogtrot is an architectural style that originated in the southern United States, particularly in the regions of Appalachia and the Deep South, during the 19th century. The defining characteristic of a dogtrot house is its unique layout, which consists of two separate log cabins or living spaces connected by a central open-air breezeway or passageway, typically covered by a shared roof. This distinctive design was developed as a practical response to the hot and humid climate of the southern states, allowing for natural ventilation and cooling. The breezeway, often referred to as the dogtrot, served multiple purposes, such as providing a shaded outdoor living space, a place for cooking and other household activities, and a sleeping area during hot summer nights. The term dogtrot is believed to have originated from the idea that dogs could easily trot through the open passageway. Dogtrot houses were constructed using locally sourced materials, primarily logs, and featured simple, functional designs that reflected the rural lifestyle of the time. Over the years, the dogtrot style evolved, with some later examples incorporating additional rooms or wings, as well as more refined architectural elements. Despite these changes, the central breezeway remained a defining feature. The dogtrot style not only represents a vernacular architectural response to climatic conditions but also embodies the cultural heritage and craftsmanship of the southern United States.
