Distortion Series Book Jackets
Distortion Series Book Jackets is an innovative series of book cover designs that explores the concept of distortion through physical, extraterrestrial, and mental manifestations, created by American designer Derek Dubler. This sophisticated design project, which earned the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in Graphics and Visual Communication Design category, uniquely unifies three distinct literary works through a conceptual exploration of distortion, employing both physical construction and photographic techniques. The series demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship through its methodology of creating tangible props for each cover, which were photographed and transformed into striking black and white compositions, later enhanced with silkscreen printing to introduce bold color combinations. Each jacket design corresponds to a specific form of distortion related to its book's content: physical distortion represented through earthquake imagery, extraterrestrial distortion explored through black hole phenomena, and mental distortion expressed through the theme of amnesia. The project's distinctive approach incorporates fundamental geometric shapes as unifying elements while allowing the typography to be affected by the respective forms of distortion, creating an immediate visual connection to each book's subject matter. Measuring 130.175mm x 22.225mm x 187.325mm, these book jackets demonstrate a masterful balance between conceptual depth and practical functionality, designed to capture attention on bookshelves while maintaining their primary protective function. The project, completed in Los Angeles during spring 2015, represents a significant achievement in editorial design, showcasing how thoughtful conceptualization and meticulous execution can transform standard book covers into compelling artistic statements that enhance the reader's engagement with the literary works they protect.
