Diatom Lights Illumination
Diatom Lights Illumination is an innovative biomimetic lighting design that transforms the microscopic beauty and functionality of diatom algae into an artistic illumination system. Created by designer Yingri Guan, this sophisticated piece represents a remarkable fusion of natural science, algorithmic design, and functional art, translating the geometric structures of diatoms into layered, three-dimensional light sculptures. The design process involves extensive research into diatom wall formations, converting biological data into mathematical equations and formulas that generate molecular outlines. These patterns are precisely laser-cut onto multiple layers of acrylic glass, which are then assembled according to algorithmic principles to create the final structure, measuring 329mm in width, 310mm in depth, and 196mm in height. The conceptual foundation of this work celebrates the essential role of diatoms in our ecosystem, particularly their ability to convert light energy into chemical energy through photosynthesis, making them crucial contributors to the Earth's oxygen production and marine food chain. This innovative approach to lighting design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Generative, Algorithmic, Parametric and AI-Assisted Design category, demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of both natural processes and contemporary design methodologies, creating a functional art piece that serves both as an illumination source and a testament to the beauty of microscopic life forms.
