Dharma Bookshelf

Dharma Bookshelf is an innovative and environmentally conscious furniture design that seamlessly integrates storage functionality with biophilic design principles. Created by Italian designer Alessandra Meacci, this versatile space divider features a sophisticated wireframe structure adorned with hexagonal modules inspired by the geometric patterns found in natural beehives. The design, which garnered recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, stands at 2400mm in height, 1270mm in width, and 620mm in depth, incorporating both lacquered wooden modules in green and yellow hues and powder-coated black iron rod components. The distinctive feature of this bookshelf lies in its ability to accommodate climbing plants, allowing users to cultivate living elements within its framework, thereby creating a dynamic and organic spatial partition that evolves with the seasons and responds to changing light conditions. The modular composition consists of seven wooden hexagonal units and four iron rod modules, complemented by a natural olive wood shelf, demonstrating a thoughtful fusion of materials and craftsmanship. This design exemplifies sustainable furniture innovation through its dual functionality as both a storage solution and a living green wall, enabling users to personalize their space while promoting a stronger connection between interior environments and nature. The project, which debuted at the Salone del Mobile in 2015, represents a significant advancement in contemporary furniture design, offering a sophisticated solution for modern open-plan spaces while addressing the growing demand for sustainable and adaptable interior elements.
