Dhanraj Bhagat
Dhanraj Bhagat (1917-1988) was an Indian sculptor renowned for his modernist approach and his significant contributions to the development of modern Indian sculpture. Born in Lahore, British India (now Pakistan), Bhagat studied at the Mayo School of Art in Lahore and later at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Bombay (now Mumbai). His early works were influenced by traditional Indian sculpture and the works of European modernists such as Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Bhagat's sculptures often featured simplified, abstracted forms and explored themes of spirituality, humanity, and the relationship between man and nature. He worked primarily in wood, stone, and metal, and his sculptures ranged from intimate, small-scale pieces to monumental public works. Bhagat played a crucial role in the development of modern Indian sculpture, breaking away from the traditional, representational style and introducing a new vocabulary of abstraction and experimentation. He was a founding member of the Delhi Shilpi Chakra, an artists' collective that promoted modernist art in India, and he taught at the Delhi Polytechnic (now the Delhi Technological University) for several decades, influencing generations of young sculptors. Bhagat's works can be found in major collections and public spaces across India, and his legacy continues to inspire and shape the course of contemporary Indian sculpture.
