Developmental AI is an emerging subfield of artificial intelligence that focuses on creating AI systems capable of learning and developing in a manner analogous to human cognitive development. Drawing inspiration from developmental psychology, neuroscience, and machine learning, developmental AI aims to build AI agents that can acquire knowledge, skills, and abilities through interaction with their environment and other agents, starting from a relatively simple or blank slate state. This approach emphasizes the importance of embodied cognition, sensorimotor integration, and social learning in the formation of intelligence. Developmental AI systems are designed to exhibit key characteristics of human cognitive development, such as curiosity, intrinsic motivation, and the ability to learn from limited data or unsupervised experiences. By gradually accumulating knowledge and refining their representations of the world, these systems are expected to display greater adaptability, generalization, and robustness compared to traditional AI approaches. Researchers in developmental AI explore various computational models and architectures, such as deep neural networks, reinforcement learning, and Bayesian models, to simulate the processes of cognitive development. The long-term goal of developmental AI is to create AI systems that can exhibit human-like intelligence, including common sense reasoning, creativity, and the ability to learn and adapt to novel situations across multiple domains.
