Design Of Unijunction Transistors
A unijunction transistor (UJT) is a three-terminal semiconductor device that exhibits negative resistance when triggered, resulting in a pulse of current into an external load. It is commonly used in relaxation oscillator circuits, pulse waveform generators, and voltage or current controlled oscillators. The UJT is made of a single type of semiconductor material, typically silicon, with one heavily doped region acting as the emitter, and two lightly doped regions acting as the base and the second emitter. Designing a good UJT involves several considerations. Firstly, the doping concentration of the base and emitter regions must be carefully chosen to ensure the desired negative resistance characteristic. Too low a concentration will result in a low peak point voltage, while too high a concentration will result in a peak point voltage that is too high and a low valley point current. Secondly, the physical geometry of the device needs to be optimized to ensure that the emitter junction is as close to the center of the device as possible, to obtain a symmetrical current-voltage characteristic curve. Thirdly, the package design must take into account the thermal properties of the device, as excessive heat can cause the device to malfunction. A successful UJT design should have a peak point voltage within a specific range, typically between 4 and 20 volts, and a valley point current that is within the range of 10 and 100 microamps. The negative resistance region should be well-defined and not too sharp, to avoid oscillations. Additionally, the device should have a high ratio of peak point voltage to valley point voltage, and a low leakage current. Finally, the device should be able to withstand a high operating temperature without failure, with a recommended maximum operating temperature of 125°C.
