Design Of Thrust Reversers For Aircraft Engines
A thrust reverser is a piece of aviation technology mounted on the jet engine, capable of modifying the direction of the engine's thrust, thereby reducing the speed of the aircraft upon landing or rejecting a takeoff. The primary function of the thrust reverser is to provide deceleration and directional control to the aircraft on the runway. The thrust reverser comes in various forms, for example, target-type, cold stream, or cascade vanes mounted around the engine, and bucket-type or clamshell that moves apart from the engine, diverting the thrust in the opposite direction. The design of thrust reversers should address several criteria that define an optimal product. First, the reverse thrust generated should be effective in reducing the velocity of the aircraft. Second, it should produce minimal noise, particularly for the benefit of surrounding communities near the airport. Therefore, noise consideration should be an essential factor in thrust reverser design, particularly for commercial applications. Third, the design of the thrust reverser should maximize the lifespan of the engine and minimize additional weight increase. Fourth, it should be effortless to operate and require minimal maintenance. Finally, among other considerations, the thrust reverser design should include additional features, such as emergency stop capability, and efficiency when used with other braking systems.
