Design Of Surge Arresters
A surge arrester, also known as a surge protector or lightning arrester, is a device used to protect electrical equipment from overvoltage transients caused by external or internal events such as lightning strikes, switching surges, and faulty equipment. Surge arresters work by diverting the excess voltage to the ground, preventing it from reaching and damaging sensitive equipment. A good design for a surge arrester should meet several criteria. Firstly, it should have a high surge current rating to handle the energy of the surge without failing. Secondly, it should provide a low impedance path to ground for the surge current which means that it should be able to allow the surge current to flow through it easily. It should also be designed with a low residual voltage, which means that the clamping voltage should be low enough to protect the equipment. Thirdly, it should have a fast response time to effectively protect the equipment from transient overvoltage. A response time of less than one nanosecond would be ideal. Fourthly, it should be able to handle repeated surges and still function effectively. In addition, the surge arrester should be compact and easy to install. It should also be able to withstand harsh environmental conditions, such as high temperatures, humidity, and corrosive substances. The cost of a good surge arrester should be reasonable and it should have a long lifespan.
