Design Of Print Heads For Ink-jet Printers

Ink-jet printers, which use print heads to create images by spraying tiny droplets of ink onto paper, have become common in offices and homes. The print head is the most crucial part of an ink-jet printer, which determines the quality of the printed product. Print heads are either integrated into the ink cartridge or attached directly to the printer. A good print head should produce fine spray droplets of ink, have high resolution and color, cover a wide printing area, have a long life with minimal need for maintenance, and have replaceable components. Print heads should be easy to install and remove, and have stable ink flow to prevent clogs and other malfunctions. To design a successful print head, it should be considered that print heads vary in their drop volume, nozzle density, and drop speed. Drop volume is the amount of ink that is sprayed from each droplet, with up to eight different droplet sizes that can be emitted from the nozzle. Nozzle density consists of the number of nozzles per inch on the print head, with a higher density of nozzles leading to higher quality prints. Finally, drop speed is high or low print speed, with the balance again depending on the desired print quality and desired speed. Beyond that, print head design should also include thermal control to aid ink recruitment and drop ejection, as well anti-clogging technologies in the case of the print nozzle. Other desirable features include the ability to easily replace clogged or broken nozzles, as well as quick calibration processes.
