Design Of Polyester Pre-oriented Yarns

Polyester pre-oriented yarns, commonly known as POY, are synthetic fibers made from polymerization of polyester. POY is created by melting the polyester chips at high temperatures, then spinning and drawing them in a process known as melt spinning. These filaments are wound onto bobbins to make POY. To design a better POY, several criteria must be met. First, it is essential to consider the desired end-use of the product, as different applications will require different qualities of yarns. For example, if the POY is intended for use in apparel, its softness and draping qualities must be considered. On the other hand, if it is intended for use in industrial settings, it must have high strength and resistance to heat and chemicals. Secondly, the denier and filament count of the POY must be optimized to meet the requirements of the application. Thinner filaments will create softer and more flexible yarns, whereas thicker filaments will result in stronger and more durable yarns. Thirdly, the level of orientation and crystallization of the POY must be controlled. Orientation is crucial as it affects the mechanical and physical properties of the POY. To achieve optimal orientation, the spinning speed and stretching ratios must be carefully adjusted to align the polymer molecules along the fiber axis. Finally, the POY must be heat-set to ensure its dimensional stability. Heat setting also enhances its physical properties such as durability, shape retention, and resistance to creasing. In summary, the design of a high-quality POY requires a focus on the end-use application, optimization of denier and filament count, control of orientation and crystallization, and heat setting for dimensional stability, shape retention, and resistance to damage.
