Design Of Pickaxes And Mattocks
Pickaxes and mattocks are hand tools used for breaking up hard ground or rock, and for digging through soil. A pickaxe consists of a pointed end and a chisel end with a long handle that can be used to break apart stones, roots, and hard earth. A mattock, on the other hand, has a similar pointed end but the other end has an adze or an axe head, used for hacking through tough roots. When designing pickaxes and mattocks, there are a few important criteria to consider. Firstly, the material of the handle should be durable and strong, allowing comfortable grip by the user. Often wooden handles are preferred for their grip and flexibility but they need to be coated to protect against wear and tear. Secondly, the weight of the tool also plays an important role. They should be neither too light nor too heavy as a light tool may not be effective against hard earth whereas a too heavy tool will be too hard for the user to use. Thirdly, the width of the head should be considered. While wider heads will cover greater areas, they will require more force from the user, so this factor must align with the user’s strength. Lastly, the length of the tool should also be designed according to the height of the user, and the task at hand. In addition to the above-listed criteria, the shape and design of the head can be modified depending on the task at hand, whether it be breaking or digging. The pick end of the head could be sharper or wider, depending on the dense or soft nature of the soil. Similarly, the axe or the adze head of the mattock could be curved or straight or with a few prongs to better capture and remove roots. By paying close attention to these considerations, a successful pickaxe or mattock can be designed suitable for varied applications.
