Design Of Gratin Dishes
Gratin dishes are shallow oven-safe containers used for cooking foods such as vegetables, meats, and casseroles that are topped with cheese or bread crumbs, then broiled or baked until the top is golden brown and crisp. The dish is believed to have originated in France and became popular worldwide in the early 19th century. To design a good gratin dish, several criteria must be considered. Firstly, the material used to make the dish should be able to withstand high temperatures without cracking or warping. The ideal material is ceramic or tempered glass. Secondly, the dish should have a wide base and shallow depth to ensure even cooking and browning of the dish. Thirdly, the dish should have a non-stick surface to eliminate sticking and facilitate easy cleaning. Fourthly, the handles should be designed such that they provide a firm grip and do not conduct heat to avoid burns. Lastly, the shape and size of the dish should be proportionate to the amount of food being served to ensure that the gratin cooks evenly. In designing a gratin dish, creativity can be employed by adding unique features like color or unique shapes, while maintaining the basic standards. Regardless of the design, a good gratin dish should be able to retain the heat and keep the dish warm long after it has been removed from the oven. With this in mind, it would be helpful for the dish to have insulating walls and a sturdy lid. In addition, showing the cooking process through the dish may add appeal to the overall design, taking into account the transparency of the material used.
