Design Of Bench Vises
A bench vise is a mechanical tool used to firmly clamp and hold workpieces in place, allowing a worker to safely perform tasks such as cutting, drilling, shaping or filing without having to worry about the piece moving or slipping. Typically, a bench vise consists of two parallel jaws, one stationary and the other movable, that are brought together by a screw mechanism, providing a tight grip on the material placed within. Bench vises come in different sizes and styles, each serving a unique purpose for different applications. Good bench vise design requires attention to several key criteria. Firstly, the jaws should be made from a durable material that can withstand heavy use and exert significant force without deformation. Cast iron, steel and brass are popular choices for vise jaws. Secondly, the jaws should be designed with a textured or grooved surface to provide a better grip on the workpiece. Thirdly, the vise should have a smooth, ergonomic handle that allows for comfortable and easy opening and closing of the jaws. Fourthly, the screw mechanism should be large enough to provide sufficient torque to hold the workpiece in place, while enough threads should be present to ensure ample clamping range. Lastly, the base of the vise should be heavy and sturdy enough to withstand the pressure and movement of the work being performed. This ensures the vise remains firmly secured to the workspace and does not move during use. In order to ensure the longevity and performance of a bench vise, proper maintenance is key. This includes regularly cleaning and lubricating the screw mechanism, keeping the jaws free of debris, and periodically tightening any loose bolts or screws.
