Design Of Barometric Condensers For Condensing Vapors By Contact With Liquids
A barometric condenser is a device used to condense vapors by contact with a liquid. It operates on the principle of lowering the pressure in the condenser to below the vapor pressure of the condensable gas. As a result, the gas is condensed into a liquid in the presence of the liquid coolant present in the condenser. To design a good barometric condenser, the following criteria must be considered: 1. Good Thermal Conductivity: The condenser must have high thermal conductivity to ensure efficient heat transfer between the vapor and the coolant. This can be achieved by using materials with high thermal conductivity, such as copper or aluminum. 2. Large Surface Area: The surface area of the condenser must be as large as possible to allow for maximum contact between the vapor and the coolant. This can be achieved by using a coiled design or by increasing the length of the condenser. 3. Proper Liquid Coolant: The coolant must have a low viscosity and high thermal conductivity to ensure efficient heat transfer. Water is a common coolant used in barometric condensers due to its high heat capacity and ease of availability. 4. Low Pressure Drop: The pressure drop across the condenser must be low to ensure the efficient flow of the vapor through the condenser. This can be achieved by using a wide bore condenser or increasing the diameter of the condenser. 5. Use of Fins: The use of fins on the condenser can increase the surface area of the condenser and improve heat transfer efficiency. However, the fins must not impede the flow of vapor through the condenser.
