Design In Rwanda
Design in Rwanda is a field of study that has been gaining increased attention in recent years. As a design historian with a background in art history, design theory, and cultural studies of Rwanda, I have been able to observe the development of diverse design movements, styles, and aesthetics in Rwanda over time. During the colonial period, the influence of the Belgian colonialists was evident in many of the decorative arts and architectural designs that emerged in the country. For example, the traditional Imigongo art form, which uses cow dung, was adapted and used to decorate the walls of churches, chapels, and other public buildings. After Rwanda's independence in 1962, many of the traditional art forms and designs were combined with modern design principles to create a unique aesthetic. This synthesis of traditional and modern design principles has been a defining feature of Rwandan design since.
