Design History In Singapore

As a design historian from Singapore, I have the privilege and responsibility of exploring the fascinating and complex story of design history in Singapore. From the early nineteenth century when the British colonial government established the first printing press and organized the first public exhibition of fine arts, to the contemporary era when the country has become a thriving hub for design, the development of design in Singapore has been shaped by a multiplicity of factors. Spanning different periods of history, designers and design innovators from Singapore have been instrumental in the development of design in the country, creating iconic works of art, architecture, and design that reflect the local culture and history. Notable works and projects include the National Museum of Singapore which opened in 1887 and was the first museum in Singapore; the Singapore Art Museum, established in 1996 as the first museum in Southeast Asia dedicated to the presentation, interpretation, and collection of modern and contemporary art from Singapore and Southeast Asia; and the Singapore Design Week, an annual design festival that highlights the creative potential of Singapore’s design scene.
