Demokratos School Hall
Demokratos School Hall is an innovative educational space transformation project located in Sveti Vlas, Bulgaria, that exemplifies the principles of democratic education through thoughtful architectural design. This Gold A' Design Award-winning interior renovation encompasses approximately 170 square meters and consists of an auditorium, stage, and adjoining lobby, specifically designed to foster independence, curiosity, and respect for children's personalities within a traditional school setting. The multifunctional space features a plywood amphitheater, a computer center for self-initiated learning, and a versatile free area that can be reconfigured into various arrangements including a 46-seat auditorium, working area with mobile tables, roundtable zone, or canteen. The design incorporates sophisticated lighting solutions, including dual-function blinds that provide both soft daylight filtration and complete blackout capabilities for multimedia presentations. A notable architectural achievement is the resolution of the stage's eccentricity through the visual separation of walking lines and amphitheater stairs, while a metal ceiling structure with a mobile curtain enables dynamic control of the stage depth, creating a 45-square-meter rehearsal room when needed. The lobby features age-appropriate oak benches and an artistic installation called the Tree of non-knowledge, which symbolically represents the relationship between formal education and self-directed learning. Completed in 2017 by architects Galina Milkova and Nedko Nikolov, this transformative project demonstrates how interior architecture can embody democratic principles of freedom, equality, and pluralism while serving multiple educational functions.
