Default Effect
Default effect, also known as default bias, is a cognitive phenomenon that occurs when individuals are presented with a default option in a decision-making scenario and choose it without actively considering other available options. This bias is often observed in situations where individuals are asked to make choices, such as selecting a health insurance plan or retirement savings plan. The default option is usually the option that requires the least amount of effort or decision-making on the part of the individual. Research has shown that the default effect can have a significant impact on decision-making outcomes. Individuals tend to choose the default option even when it is not in their best interest, leading to suboptimal decisions. For example, individuals may stick with a default health insurance plan that does not provide adequate coverage for their specific needs, simply because it requires less effort to do so. The default effect is thought to be driven by a combination of factors, including cognitive laziness, decision fatigue, and social norms. Individuals may choose the default option because it aligns with their perception of what is socially acceptable or because they are too mentally exhausted to consider other options. To mitigate the negative effects of the default effect, decision-makers can take steps to make alternative options more salient and accessible. This can include providing clear information about the available options, highlighting the potential benefits of alternative options, and making it easier for individuals to opt out of the default option.

Default Effect
Default effect is a cognitive bias or logical fallacy that is observed when individuals opt for the default option without actively considering their choices. This phenomenon is commonly observed in decision-making scenarios where individuals are asked to make choices. Individuals tend to opt for the predetermined default option without considering all the other options, primarily due to the presence of inertia or lack of effort. This cognitive bias can lead to suboptimal decisions as individuals tend to overlook the other options that might have been more suitable for their situation.
