Deathnival Education

Deathnival Education is an innovative death education campaign and interactive learning system designed to address the cultural taboo surrounding death in Chinese society, particularly focusing on young adults in Hong Kong. This comprehensive educational initiative, created by designer Chan Ching Ling and recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Education, Teaching Aid and Training Content Design category, employs a unique three-stage approach to facilitate meaningful discussions about mortality. The program combines interactive elements, board game mechanics, and social media engagement to create an accessible and engaging learning experience. The design deliberately incorporates colorful illustrations and dark humor, drawing inspiration from traditional art forms such as Danse Macabre, to reframe death-related discussions in a more approachable context. The physical components of the system include a carefully crafted package measuring 230mm x 60mm x 200mm when compact, featuring high-quality materials such as Graffiti Diamond Paper, laser-cut plywood, and professionally printed elements. The educational journey begins with an interactive quiz that categorizes participants into five distinct death attitude profiles, followed by an explorative board game that covers various death-related topics from practical preparations to afterlife concepts, and concludes with a reflective social media campaign called Deathtalk. This innovative approach to death education, developed between September 2020 and May 2021, addresses a significant gap in Hong Kong's social support system and educational infrastructure, offering a solution to the limited availability of death education resources while challenging traditional Chinese perceptions of mortality through engaging, informative, and culturally sensitive design.
