Dan Mo Residence

Dan Mo Residence is an architecturally distinctive retirement dwelling located in Taichung, completed in February 2020, that exemplifies minimalist design principles while incorporating profound symbolic elements from Chinese culture. Designed by Ta-Hsiu Lee, this 440-square-meter structure draws inspiration from the lotus flower, a traditional symbol of purity emerging from mundane surroundings, reflecting the owner's pure living mindset after retiring from a complex business environment. The architectural composition features innovative cuboid elements deliberately positioned on tilted rooftop structures, challenging conventional horizontal and vertical placements while reducing the visual mass of the three-story building to appear as a two-story structure, thereby minimizing street-level oppression and optimizing natural light penetration. The residence's exterior is characterized by its thoughtful material application, particularly in its specially treated mortar surfaces that provide both aesthetic texture and practical durability against environmental factors. The interior design implements a circular flow pattern on the first floor, fostering fluid movement between functional spaces and encouraging family interaction, while the second floor radiates outward from a central family room, creating an interconnected living environment. The project's commitment to material minimization represents a progressive approach to sustainable design, emphasizing reduced consumption over conventional green material usage. This architectural achievement was recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category in 2022, acknowledging its innovative spatial design, cultural sensitivity, and technical excellence in residential architecture.
