Daiichi Hospital

Daiichi Hospital is an innovative healthcare facility located in Himeji City, Japan, that represents a significant departure from traditional hospital architecture through its distinctive design approach. Completed in March 2023, this seven-story medical facility encompasses 2,239 square meters of space and accommodates 100 beds, incorporating modern healthcare requirements while challenging the conventional monolithic appearance of hospital buildings. The architectural design, conceived by Tetsuya Matsumoto, features a striking north facade characterized by playful random-width window openings that create the appearance of a thin sheet, with a series of surface duplications sliding eastward to produce an engaging open book effect that marks the main entrance. The structure employs advanced engineering solutions to meet Japanese earthquake and fire safety regulations, utilizing a robust framework of metallic beams and pillars, while the exterior is finished with specialized cladding panels. The interior design philosophy shifts away from typical clinical aesthetics toward a more hospitality-oriented environment, incorporating a thoughtful selection of materials including vinyl flooring, wooden panels, and melamine boards. The functional layout is meticulously organized across multiple floors, with the ground level housing the reception, consultation rooms, and emergency services, while upper floors accommodate specialized medical facilities including dialysis units, operating theaters, and inpatient rooms. The sixth floor features rehabilitation facilities, dining areas, and administrative offices, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to healthcare delivery. This architectural achievement, recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, successfully balances the complex requirements of modern healthcare delivery with innovative design solutions, creating a more welcoming and less intimidating healthcare environment while maintaining operational efficiency within a constrained budget and irregular site conditions.
