Cuyabeno Reservation Packaging

Cuyabeno Reservation Packaging

Cuyabeno Reservation Packaging is an innovative packaging design solution created to represent and preserve the cultural heritage of Ecuador's indigenous Cofan people through souvenir packaging for the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. This thoughtfully crafted design, developed by Michelle Rivadeneira, seamlessly integrates the distinctive visual elements of the Cofan ethnic group, particularly emphasizing their characteristic use of vibrant feathers and traditional red and black face paintings derived from achiote and charcoal. The packaging design, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category, employs eco-friendly craft paper as its primary material, demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability while maintaining functional durability. The design's versatility allows for adaptation across various sizes, from shopping bags to small boxes, making it highly practical for different souvenir applications. The cultural significance of the design lies in its ability to capture and communicate the essence of the Cofan people, who inhabit the Sucumbios Province of northeast Ecuador and southern Colombia, between the Guamues and Aguarico Rivers. The packaging serves as more than a mere container; it functions as a cultural ambassador, offering visitors a tangible connection to Ecuador's rich biodiversity and indigenous heritage. The design's visual narrative focuses particularly on the Cofan's distinctive ceremonial crown, featuring striking colors and animal feathers, creating a memorable representation of Ecuador's cultural diversity that resonates with international visitors long after their departure from the reserve.
