Cumulus Pavilion
Cumulus Pavilion is an innovative architectural installation that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of nature-inspired design and functional spatial architecture, created as a VIP lounge space for an prestigious art event in Hong Kong. The pavilion's distinctive design draws inspiration from the ethereal beauty of cumulus clouds, utilizing 23 layers of silk chiffon fabric suspended at 200mm intervals to create an immersive environment that mimics the fluid, ever-changing nature of cloud formations. Spanning an impressive 25 meters in length and 6 meters in width, the pavilion employs a sophisticated gradient blue printing technique on seamless fabric, achieved through collaboration with one of only two facilities worldwide capable of continuous printing on such extensive lengths. The structure's minimalist wooden framework complements the floating illusion created by the translucent fabric layers, while effectively addressing the spatial challenges presented by the narrow corridor location and existing architectural columns. The pavilion's design excellence was recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to spatial design and material application. The installation's technical sophistication is particularly evident in its careful consideration of fabric selection, with silk chiffon chosen specifically for its printability, transparency, and pliable characteristics, enabling the creation of a semi-private space that maintains visual connectivity with its surroundings while providing an ethereal, cloud-like atmosphere for visitors.
