Cubic Multifunctional Chair

Cubic Multifunctional Chair

Cubic Multifunctional chair is an innovative furniture design that seamlessly integrates illumination with seating functionality, representing a significant advancement in contemporary furniture design. Created by Finnish designer Ari Korolainen, this distinctive piece challenges traditional furniture conventions by incorporating LED lighting elements into the armchair structure, effectively combining two typically separate furniture elements into a single, cohesive unit. The chair's design features a sophisticated metal frame construction complemented by metal mesh, leather upholstery, and opal plastic components, with thoughtfully placed wooden elements that serve as ergonomic grip points to assist users when standing up. The chair's dimensions of 879 x 730 x 600mm are carefully calculated to ensure optimal comfort and functionality, while its innovative lighting system can be activated either manually or through proximity sensors, creating various atmospheric possibilities through different color temperatures. This versatile piece, which won the Bronze A' Design Award in Furniture Design category, demonstrates exceptional attention to accessibility and user experience, particularly considering the needs of elderly users. The design's distinctive feature lies in its reversal of traditional furniture lighting paradigms - rather than being an illuminated piece of furniture, it serves as a light source itself. The chair incorporates practical elements such as strategically positioned partial-length armrests that accommodate beverage placement while maintaining the design's primary functions of seating and illumination. The bottom of each chair bears the designer's signature, date, and individual numbering, emphasizing its artistic and collectible nature.
