Cubes Aleorion Lighthouse

Cubes Aleorion Lighthouse is an innovative architectural concept lighthouse designed for the seaport of Volos, Greece, representing a contemporary interpretation of ancient maritime safety structures. The 14.25-meter tower employs a distinctive design philosophy characterized by stacked cube-shaped concrete blocks that gradually shift off-center, creating a dynamic vertical composition. The structure's architectural language draws inspiration from the historic Aleorion of Xerxes, built around 480 BC and considered the world's most ancient maritime safety structure. The lighthouse's design seamlessly integrates functionality with aesthetic appeal through its thoughtfully crafted internal voids, which house a practical stairway system while simultaneously offering carefully framed perspectives of the surrounding cityscape, port, and bay area. The exposed concrete construction deliberately echoes the materiality of the urban port environment and the paved breakwater, establishing a strong contextual relationship with its surroundings. Each level of the structure presents unique viewpoints, transforming the lighthouse into both a functional maritime safety feature and an engaging public observatory. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, successfully addresses multiple architectural challenges, including the creation of a meaningful landmark at the port entry, sensitivity to the urban aesthetic context, and acknowledgment of the region's rich maritime heritage. The project extends beyond its primary function as a navigational aid to become an architectural destination that enhances the city's waterfront promenade, encouraging public engagement and offering a new perspective on the relationship between urban infrastructure and public space.
