Cryptographic Beings Artwork

Cryptographic Beings Artwork is a groundbreaking bio-hybrid machine installation that explores the intersection of biological systems and digital information storage through the manipulation of photosynthetic organisms. Created by designer Michael Sedbon, this innovative installation consists of 30 vegetal bits housed in precisely engineered glass vessels containing living algae colonies known as Marimos. The installation employs a sophisticated system of motorized robotic arms that control the exposure of algae to light, effectively encoding binary information in their physical state - floating when exposed to light (representing one state) and sinking in darkness (representing the alternate state). This pioneering work, which stands at 300 centimeters in height and weighs 300 kilograms, demonstrates a novel approach to information storage by leveraging the natural photosynthetic properties of algae, where the production of gas vesicles causes the organisms to float or sink, creating a biological binary system capable of storing a five-letter word. The project, which emerged from extensive research into bio-hybrid computation, represents a significant advancement in the exploration of living organisms as computational devices, challenging traditional paradigms of digital storage and processing. The installation, which received the Silver A' Design Award in the Interactive, Experiential and Immersive Design Installations category, operates autonomously for months using custom-developed sensors and engineered mechanical parts, making visible the fascinating intersection of biological processes and digital information storage while raising profound questions about the future of computing and human-nature interactions.
