CRRC 1897 Display Center Display Center

CRRC 1897 Display Center Display Center is an innovative architectural renovation project that transformed a historic locomotive production workshop into a contemporary exhibition space, earning recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design. This sophisticated adaptive reuse project prioritizes spatial perception over conventional functional demands, creating a unique dialogue between historical industrial architecture and modern design interventions. The design philosophy centers on preserving the external meaning of the original structure while introducing contemporary elements through a careful balance of old and new. The space features distinctive polycarbonate folding sliding doors that create an intentional material contrast with the existing brick walls, while maintaining operational flexibility for large-scale events. A notable technical achievement is the integration of mechanical systems within an intermediate box structure, preserving the aesthetic integrity of the original roof truss. The design implements a continuous walking system with a central box, enabling visitors to move between three floors in a non-repetitive loop, enhancing the spatial experience. Located in Beijing's Fengtai district, this transformation represents a pioneering example of industrial heritage preservation, where the design team, led by Chang Ke, Li Wenhan, and Liu Minjie, successfully created a space that honors its manufacturing history while serving contemporary exhibition needs. The project's innovative approach to space perception and material selection, combined with its thoughtful integration of modern amenities, demonstrates excellence in adaptive reuse architecture and interior design.
