Cross Multifunctional Bookstore

Cross Multifunctional Bookstore is an innovative architectural and interior design project that reimagines the traditional bookstore concept through a sophisticated fusion of Chinese and Western cultural elements. Located in Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, this 780-square-meter space represents a significant advancement in public reading environments, distinguished by its unique parametric design approach and cultural symbolism. The design, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design, masterfully balances functionality with aesthetic appeal through its distinctive use of Chinese moon gates and Western arches. The space is strategically divided, with 70% utilizing a cost-effective warehouse-style design, while the remaining 30% features an intricate parametric installation comprising 48 carefully generated gates and arches. This installation, created using Grasshopper software and constructed with perforated aluminum panels and steel frameworks, serves multiple purposes: spatial organization, visual navigation, and symbolic representation of cultural synthesis. The design's color gradient system not only enhances wayfinding but also creates a sophisticated visual narrative that transitions between different functional zones. LED light strips embedded within the framework transform the industrial materials into ethereal, gauze-like surfaces, creating an atmosphere that encourages intellectual exploration and social interaction. The project's name Cross carries deep philosophical significance, drawing from Buddhist concepts of transition and wisdom, while simultaneously addressing practical challenges of public accessibility and budget constraints through innovative architectural solutions.
