Create Your Own Moon Moon Cake is an innovative packaging design project that reimagines the traditional Chinese mooncake experience through interactive elements and contemporary aesthetics. Developed by designers Lam Cheung and Yi Lau, this design concept transforms the conventional Mid-Autumn Festival celebration into an engaging family activity that reinforces the festival's core value of reunion. The design consists of a meticulously crafted acrylic box containing a custom-made round mooncake, complemented by a honey spray applicator and an array of test tubes filled with edible colored sugar powder. The distinctive round shape of the mooncake serves as a blank canvas, deliberately mimicking the golden moon, while the honey spray functions as an adhesive for the decorative sugar powders. This innovative approach to mooncake presentation earned recognition with a Gold A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category, acknowledging its contribution to cultural preservation through modern design. The project's significance lies in its ability to address the contemporary challenge of maintaining traditional cultural practices in an increasingly modernized society, particularly in Hong Kong, where the true meaning of the Mid-Autumn Festival can sometimes be overshadowed by commercial gift-giving. The design successfully combines food-safe materials with structural innovation, overcoming significant technical challenges in both the mooncake production and packaging design. The project, completed between June and August 2015, demonstrates how thoughtful design can reinvigorate traditional customs by creating meaningful interactions between family members, ultimately fostering a deeper appreciation for cultural heritage through creative engagement.
