Cranach Presse

Cranach Presse was a German publishing house that operated from 1913 to 1931. It was founded by Count Harry Kessler, a German art collector and patron, who aimed to create a publishing house that would produce books of exceptional quality and beauty. The press was named after the German Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach the Elder, whose work was admired by Kessler. Cranach Presse was known for its exquisite typography, elegant design, and use of high-quality materials. The press employed some of the most talented artists, designers, and craftsmen of the time, who worked together to create books that were works of art in themselves. The books produced by Cranach Presse were often limited editions, printed on handmade paper, and bound in fine leather or cloth. One of the most significant achievements of Cranach Presse was its publication of the works of Friedrich Nietzsche, the German philosopher. The press produced a complete edition of Nietzsche's works in 18 volumes, which was considered a landmark in the history of book publishing. The edition was notable for its exceptional design, which included illustrations by the German artist Max Beckmann. Cranach Presse was also known for its collaborations with some of the most prominent writers and artists of the time. The press produced books featuring the work of artists such as Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Wassily Kandinsky, as well as writers such as Rainer Maria Rilke and Thomas Mann. Despite its relatively short existence, Cranach Presse had a significant impact on the world of book publishing. Its books are highly sought after by collectors and are considered some of the most beautiful and valuable books ever produced.
