CR1 Wheelchair
CR1 Wheelchair is an innovative, custom-fabricated carbon fiber mobility solution that represents a significant advancement in wheelchair design and engineering. Developed by Doug Garven, a veteran product designer with over three decades of experience in medical equipment design, this ultralight wheelchair exemplifies the convergence of form and function through its aerodynamic profile and user-centric customization capabilities. The design features a groundbreaking dual-angle front end that follows the natural contours of the user's body, enabling enhanced accessibility and maneuverability in confined spaces. Weighing merely 6.8 kilograms, the wheelchair employs a proprietary foam core fabrication process that not only enhances structural integrity but also provides superior vibration absorption. The frame consists of two mirrored sideframes, each comprising three bonded sections with varying angles and lengths, connected by a bonded crossbar. The ovalized tubing is strategically oriented at different angles throughout the frame to maximize both strength and user comfort. The dual-purpose sideguards serve both protective and structural functions, while the incorporation of titanium trim rings on the footrest and SMC carbon reinforced components ensures durability in high-wear areas. The wheelchair's design, which earned the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Product Engineering and Technical Design category, draws inspiration from Formula 1 race cars and the F-22 Raptor, reflecting its emphasis on performance and advanced engineering. Each CR1 Wheelchair is meticulously customized based on nine specific measurements of the user's body proportions and preferences, with dimensions ranging from 330-483mm in length, 330-457mm in width, and 381-533mm in height. The design underwent rigorous development, including FEA analysis, user evaluation, and compliance testing to meet ANSI/RESNA and ISO 7176 standards, establishing new benchmarks in wheelchair design through its innovative approach to accessibility, customization, and performance.
