Courtyards House

Courtyards House

Courtyards House is an innovative architectural design that masterfully integrates traditional Cypriot residential architecture with contemporary design principles, distinguished by its incorporation of three expansive green courtyards that create seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces. This two-story residential structure, completed in 2020 in Nicosia, Cyprus, exemplifies a sophisticated response to challenging environmental conditions through its thoughtful architectural composition. The design employs a reversed concrete beam structural system complemented by slim steel circular columns, creating an airy, minimalistic aesthetic while maintaining structural integrity. The house's distinctive features include floor-to-ceiling sliding aluminum glazing systems that enhance interior spaces and strengthen the indoor-outdoor relationship, while a lightweight perforated western wall, constructed from Ytong blocks, provides superior thermal and acoustic insulation. The upper floor, characterized by its rectilinear form, houses bedrooms that open onto protected, uncovered continuous balconies, while the ground floor orchestrates daily activities around three main courtyards measuring 9x9m, 4x9m, and 6.5x6.20m respectively. This architectural solution, which won the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional innovation in addressing the challenges of creating comfortable living spaces in an inhospitable environment, effectively balancing privacy with connectivity to nature through its courtyard-centric design approach.
