Courtiers Reply
The courtier's reply is a type of cognitive bias and logical fallacy that occurs when an individual attempts to give a socially acceptable answer to a question, rather than a truthful one. This type of response may be used to protect an individual's reputation, or to avoid a conflict of interest. It is often used in situations where an individual has a vested interest in the outcome of a situation, or where answering honestly could have negative consequences for them. The courtier's reply is particularly common in circumstances where an individual is asked to provide an opinion on a topic or situation in which they feel they lack the expertise to provide an informed opinion. In such cases, the individual may choose to provide a vague or non-committal reply in order to avoid giving a judgement which could be considered wrong or inappropriate.
