Corner 60’s Residence

Corner 60's Residence is a masterfully renovated three-story residential building located in Changhua County, Taiwan, that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional Taiwanese architectural elements with contemporary design principles. Originally constructed in the 1970s as a middle-class dwelling, this 180-square-meter corner building underwent a transformative renovation that preserved significant historical elements while introducing modern functionality and spatial innovation. The design, created by Yu-Jui Chang and team, addresses the inherent challenges of traditional elongated Taiwanese floor plans through innovative architectural solutions, including the implementation of double-height spaces, strategic ventilation systems, and the integration of natural elements. The project's distinctive features include the preservation of original materials such as fine-pebble flooring, mosaic tiles, and Taiwan Cypress woodwork, complemented by contemporary additions of black ironwork, solid timber, and glass tiles. A defining characteristic of the renovation is its sophisticated approach to natural ventilation, achieved through the creation of a vertical light and wind atrium, enhanced by strategic tree placement that facilitates air circulation between floors. The ground floor serves a dual purpose as both a café and community gathering space, while the upper floors accommodate living quarters and multipurpose areas. The design earned recognition with a Golden A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its exceptional achievement in spatial innovation and cultural preservation. The project stands as a testament to thoughtful architectural adaptation, successfully addressing modern living requirements while maintaining strong connections to traditional Taiwanese architectural heritage through its careful material selection and spatial planning.
